In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry

This transcription of In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry is for guitar players wanting to learn an instrumental version of the Ray Dorset song that is arguably one of the bands biggest hits.

Although simple enough for beginners to learn the pretty standard form for the harmonic content, this not really an easy transcription to play of the vocal melody. If you are comfortable with open position E and A chords and can manage a B major chord of some description, you should be fine having go at playing along with this song.

If you are okay with alternate picking of eighth notes (quavers) at a tempo circa 80bpm you should be able to cope with learning the tune to this song. If you do find it difficult just treat as a project song and use the study of it over time as a practice vehicle to develop the techniques.

Who is Mungo Jerry?

Although some may think of Mungo Jerry as a person it is really the name of the British pop/rock band that formed in the early 70’s.  Saying that the front man of the band, Ray Dorset, in a way is Mungo Jerry. He is the founder and only everlasting member of the everchanging line up of the band. He also wrote In the Summertime and most of the songs for Mungo Jerry.
